Someone brought this point up above and it bears repeating. I would add the following: When young future doctors make the decision to go to medical school, there are all kinds of motivations. Some are motivated mainly by a basic desire or quest to help people, to cure disease, to diminish suffering. Some are motivated strictly by the perceived big financial rewards of a medical career (I can vouch for this, I was in medical school and I knew people like that)... Anyway, there is a whole spectrum of motivations involving helping people and earning a big income, and many people who display shades or combinations of the two factors in-between. (Of course, now with HMOs being such a dominant force, the promise of making huge incomes has diminished somewhat in many specialties.)
Let's say 70% of future doctors are primarily motivated by helping people, and 30% by making a big income. Along the path toward a medical career, there are many choices a person can make. The biggest choice is what specialty to pursue.
Generally (in my experience and belief) those who pursue fields like cosmetic surgery (especially non-reconstructive, aesthetic surgery) are more motivated by money than the AVERAGE doctor.
Presumably, those who were more interested in helping people and less interested in money went off to specialize in fields like pediatrics or general practice, which are on the bottom of the scale for doctors in terms of pay. Those who were interested in BOTH helping suffering people AND in big money went into fields like oncology, neurosurgery, general surgery.
And those who were PRIMARILY interested in money, and not compassion, from the get-go, are attracted to fields like aesthetic plastic surgery. Let's face it -- although hairloss makes a lot of us upset, it's not a life-threatening disease. And hairloss is only one of the things cosmetic surgeons treat. Many cosmetic surgeons perform truly frivolous procedures. For instance, "spot" liposuction for models and wealthy teenagers who have obsessions with their weight. Or the latest thing they're pushing, Botox injections.
So, from the start of a person's medical career, a natural selection process takes place. Eventually those doctors who were most interested purely in money end up in fields like aesthetic cosmetic surgery. And that's where most of the HT surgeons are. So, it shouldn't be surprising to us when they exhibit blatantly mercenary tendencies.
I'm not saying ALL hair transplant surgeons are like this, but you'd expect to see a much higher percentage of mercenary, money-above-everything doctors in this field, and you know what? You DO.
